5 Real Simple Ideas for Essential Self Care for Moms

When it comes to self care for moms, it can be easier to push it off; I get it. I used to do that often to prioritize my family’s needs over mine, and now I have come up with 4 self-care mom tips that keep me from diving off the deep end and make me a better mom to my family because I’m happier.

As busy moms, we have a hard time putting our own needs ahead of others. A new mom will have a harder time trying to do this because of the adjustment it takes to have a busy schedule.

Whether you are returning to the workforce after having a baby or not, being a stay-at-home mom in the early weeks can really make even getting your basic needs a hard task.

If you are looking for the best tips to tackle time management for moms, there are systems you can put into place to make it happen.

If you don’t handle your self care in the beginning, it can lead to mental health issues that can be hard to recover from.

One of the important things to remember is that the only thing that matters is that you get a good handle on moms self care.

There are so many easy things that you can do to help with self care.

For example, taking deep breaths, finding time to get in a little physical activity, or taking care of your skin are the first signs of self care for moms.

Wake up before the family.

Doing this allowed me to get some “me time” before I had to give my time to everyone else. Especially if you have small children, your day is non-stop when they wake up. 

This also allows you to do things that you want to do without the sense of censorship. This can include watching your favorite TV show, eating your favorite meal, or using the bathroom without little hands opening under the door. 

Doing something like listening to your favorite song can really change your mood and get you prepared to tackle the day ahead.

My next tip about self care for moms is not to compare yourself to others. To do this, you need to

Take a day off social media.

Social media can be toxic. Looking at your feed of some moms or families that seem like they have it all together and you are struggling can negatively impact your mental and physical health.

If you always compare yourself to the Joneses, it’s time to step back. This also allows you to be more present with yourself and your feelings.

I only go on social media a few days a week, and it helps me stay focused on what is more important to me so I don’t whine up with imposter syndrome because of something someone else is doing.

You can also tap into doing other activities like adult coloring books, knocking out some household chores, or even having a date night. These are some easy self-care activities that you can do with little cost.

Remember, the better care you take of yourself will allow you to give your kids the best version of yourself.

If you find that you aren’t getting enough sleep, then you need to

Get some sleep.

Contrary to popular demand, getting a good night’s sleep can improve your overall health. While most moms can’t get 8 hours of sleep, aiming for 6-8 hours is good enough.

By getting a better night’s sleep, your overall health will improve, including healthier weight and more patience.

Also, when you feel more rested, you can do more things during the day, which will be important if you have younger children.

Realistic Activities

Make no mistake that with everything on your to-do list, you can feel like you have the most chaotic schedule ever and can’t get any fresh air or quiet time if you find it hard to devise a realistic plan to create your own routine,

Consider therapy.

If you find your daily tasks overwhelming and need a neutral person to talk it out with, therapy could be the answer.

There are different therapy options for you to consider, and you can find one that will work perfectly for your lifestyle. 

Below are a few resources for you to get started. If you have insurance, check to see if this is covered. There are overage options where you can get a few sessions included before paying out of pocket.

Recite affirmations.

Being a parent, wife, sister, daughter, or friend is overwhelming. You can feel like no matter what you do, it’s never good enough or you are never making anyone happy.

Finding a few affirmations will allow you to keep going despite tough times. I usually say the first few in the morning and the last few throughout the day.

It makes the most sense since that is how you start to feel throughout the day.

  3. I was created to be my children’s mom. I am the best mom for them.
  4. I will practice self-care to be a good mom.

  8. I have all I need within me.
  9. I’m not afraid to ask for help.
  10. Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.
  11. I will put on my oxygen mask first.
  12. I got this!
