As a new mom of a 10-week-old son, I’m always looking for ways how to get baby to sleep at night. My baby won’t sleep anymore, I’ve tried everything. For some reason, he will not go to sleep anymore during the day and I’m not sure why but I got to the bottom of it so I can share it with you.

I’ve tried everything to tire this boy out. However, like a lot of newborns, he fights to sleep like he is fighting in these streets. Ever since he was born, my son has been a very alert baby. When he was first born, when he got his Vitamin K shot (given to babies to help clot their blood, especially boys who will be circumcised), he didn’t even scream or shout he was so quiet.

I’ve done and tried everything to get him to sleep like he used to, but he is not interested. Anything from tummy time (which he hates) to reading to him and even dancing with him listening to Juicy J (don’t judge me). We didn’t buy a bunch of toys for him since we weren’t sure what he would be interested in. Plus, you don’t want to buy a bunch of ish and not use it, so we’ve learned it best to wait until the baby hits a certain age before buying stuff.

I know what you are thinking, “what about the baby shower gifts.” We mainly got clothes which he can’t fit anymore because he’s really long, so we outgrew them very quickly. Most of the time at baby showers, you really don’t get what you need. You get what other people want to give you, which sucks. If you are having a baby shower or going to one here are some universal things parents need (from 0-6 months), check out this post.

How to put a baby to sleep fast

After doing some research, asking other parents, and asking the pediatrician, here were their recommendations for how to get your baby to sleep.

Baby books for boys

Books are a great option because you can pick them up at any time and most of the books for newborns are sensory so there any a lot of words on the page to worry about reading. Particularly books in black and white since when babies are first born, they don’t see in color right away. Crib toys to help baby sleep

There are toys that you can put inside of the crib that will help your baby fall to sleep faster. They are made to be put in the crib with your baby so you don’t have to worry about it becoming a choking hazzard for them. You can also find devices that are made to provide specfic soundwaves to help babies sleep as well. My son didn’t like the device, but it was something that was worth trying and recommended by many new moms.

Playmats for babies

Playmats, swings, or anything that allows babies to kick and punch above their head helps with developing motor skills. Getting them in black and white is recommended for up to 4 months since, again, they can’t see in color right away.

Diapers and wipes

The type of diapers and wipes that you get for your baby can also affect their sleeping. Make sure to montoir if your baby develops any irratation or rashes when it comes to the diarpers and wipes you are using. These are the type that we use and even though they might be considered expensive, the cost is not an option when it comes to ensuring that our son has the best so that we can have the best night sleep as well.

Dr. Brown Bottles

I would highly recommend getting Dr. Brown’s bottles. When babies are first born, they take in a lot of air, which causes babies to have gas. These bottles have been a lifesaver when it comes to feedings. If you are bottle feeding you baby you want ot invent in the best bottles. Swaddle baby for sleep

If you are wondering if swaddling your baby is safe the answer is yes. If you don’t know what swaddling is its a traditional practice of wrapping a baby up gently in a light, breathable blanket to help them feel calm and sleep. It mimics how they were in the womb and its comforting for newborn and infants adjusting earthside.

While in the hopsital or birth center the nurses and doctors have mastered the swaddle technique, its actually not as easy as you may think to swaddle your baby.

We couldn’t master the traditional swaddle, so we found swaddles. The rest is self-explanatory. Also, it helps the baby sleep better at night.

Don’t feel bad if you don’t have any of them. But this is just the start of crucial things you will need as soon as the baby is born. You bring them home from the hospital, birth center, or home birth. Now these are more common items you can find on the baby shower registry but if you didn’t put them on there you can find these anywhere.

Your pediatrician will also advise on what is appropriate for your baby based on age. Make sure to speak up so that if you have any questions, they will answer them. A quick note. If your pediatrician acts like they don’t want to give you information or they seem short with you. Find a new doctor.

Especially when it comes to your baby and their sleep patterns. You’ll learn very quickly that when it comes to your child’s health, especially for newborns, if you aren’t getting what you need, or they aren’t accommodating, it’s a bad match.
