With these changes also comes a joy unlike any other in life. Though you might not think that pet care and care for a baby are the same, you would be wrong. As a pet mom and a toddler mom, I know firsthand what it takes to be a parent in both aspects.

Not surprisingly, you may start to feel nervous as the responsibility approaches. It is normal to have these feelings of uncertainty and may not know which way to go.

This post is about how to plan for a baby.

Here are a few tips to prepare yourself for the challenges that await you when you become a parent. If you need parenting advice, you can check out these blog posts where I share my personal experience with parenting by clicking here.

How to Plan for a Baby Financially

  1. Communicate first if you are in a relationship. It’s important to talk about children. Before you decide to have a child, talk with your spouse openly.
    1. Parenting is a team effort. Going into such an endeavor with team members on opposite pages isn’t good. Children can and will complicate an already challenging aspect of your life. If your partner isn’t ready, then put it off.
  2. Care for a pet. Owning and caring for a pet provides real-world experience in caring for a living creature without the pressure and intensity of having a child. On a much smaller scale, caring for pets allows you to experience the joy of developing a relationship and the responsibility of providing for its happiness and health.
    • Pets can simulate many of the responsibilities of being a parent. Pets need attention, you have to feed them, and they’ll wake you up in the night for random reasons. They’re even moody and cranky sometimes. Honestly, this was the best way we were able to prepare for parenthood because pets can’t talk.
    • Pets will also teach you other accepts of parenting that you might not immediately think of regarding humility, patience, and empathy. Healthcare and regular check-ups for your pet also come with parenting and are something you will have to keep up if you want to keep your pet’s health in check.

Planning for Baby Checklist

  1. Take an inanimate object and treat it like you would a child: getting up to feed it, taking it around with you all day, and making sure nothing wrong happens. Carry around a bag of powder or an egg. This is a frequent preparation exercise for helping people understand the time investment and attention required in having a child. You can do other things, but this is the easiest to do, just like in class in high school.
  2. Research. Many books go into great detail on preparing yourself for the upcoming life change. These books can provide an excellent education that shortens the learning curve and helps you benefit from the experiences of others who’ve been there.
    • You can make decisions based on a wealth of experience, even if you’re brand-new to parenting, through the education that books provide. Books can also prepare you for the common pitfalls that new parents face. Also, books will give you ideas of things to try that you haven’t thought about doing before and bring to life examples you may need in the future.
    • You can also find a plethora of pertinent information on the Internet. Visit informational websites, blogs of new parents, and parenting forums.
    • Even if you read every book on parenting, there is no manual on the right or wrong way to parent. Use the books as a point of reference but not as the must-do list to give yourself the flexibility to adjust based on the needs of your baby and family.

Easy Hacks on How to Prepare for a Child

  1. Babysit. One of the best ways to determine if you’re ready for children is to use the real thing as a test. Try babysitting the child of a neighbor or friend. Babysitting other kids is the closest simulation to parenting that you’ll find. While babysitting and raising children are quite different, the experience of babysitting will give you a taste of what’s to come when you have a child.

Bringing a baby into the world can be one of the greatest joys you’ll ever experience. But it’s essential to ensure that you’re ready.

Prepare yourself as much as possible and communicate with your partner throughout. As the big day approaches, you may feel anxiety, but you can ease these nervous feelings with thorough preparation.
